SAT - June 13th - Flashing Lights! (NOW ALL AGES) Ibiza on the Gowanus

May 13th, 2009

**** FLASHING LIGHTS IS NOW AN ALL-AGES EVENT!!****

***FOR ONE DAY ONLY WE WILL BE CELEBRATING
FLASHING LIGHTS WITH JELLO SHOTS AT BKLYN YARD****

FLASHING LIGHTS is the neon brainchild of some of the city’s most beloved selectors: DJ AYRES (responsible for 7+ sweaty years of The Rub parties at Southpaw), NICK CATCHDUBS (remix/mixtape phenom and co-founder of the hit indie label Fool’s Gold) and JUBILEE (BK bass sweetheart behind her own newly minted Nightshifters imprint).

These three constantly-touring DJs have shared their signature sounds with crowds around the world, but always wondered why there wasn’t a genuinely fun and unpretentious electronic dance party to play in their own hometown. So this past fall, Flashing Lights was born to fill that void with HOUSE+DISCO+TECHNO+RAVE as the block-letter flyers plainly state. No hype, just tuuunes!

In only a few short months, the FL trio have branded their party as a true Friday night destination, thanks to exciting and unpredictable sets blending brand new music and revitalized dance classics. With guest appearances on the decks from big name friends (A-Trak, Klever), local heroes (DJ Dara, Egg Foo Young) and rising talent (Nadastrom, Nacho Lovers), each edition has brought new musical delights. By teaming up with party promoters Mean Red and Good Peoples, the team has been able to switch up venues from one electric spot to another, keeping the crowd bumping in giant clubs, underground lounges and hijacked dim sum restaurants alike. As the New Yorker says, “recent Flashing Lights parties have been high-spirited, low-attitude events that recall the mood of New York City dance clubs from the early eighties, like Danceteria. Remember: the event is actually for dancers, rather than for people who need to text each other in public.”

SAT - June 20th - Nublu in BKLYN

May 13th, 2009

*** THIS EVENT IS CANCELED DUE TO RAIN***

*** WE WILL NOT BE RELOCATING TO THE RAIN LOCATION**

Nublu, the East Village outpost that Ilhan Ersahin started in 2002, is like a little clubhouse where friends get together and just play music with each other.

But, as is often the case, what seems most simple is most special. The magic under the little blue light that marks the entrance to the club emanates from a group of players from all over the world with regulars hailing from Brazil, Eastern Europe, the UK, the US and everywhere between. What’s more, they happen to be among the most sought after musicians around. They’ve regularly shared stages and made recordings with Herbie Hancock, David Byrne, Sun Ra, Beck, and John Zorn to rattle off a few. Nightly these players come together at Nublu to share their ideas and create music together. Their improvisations reflect all their influences, shared and individual. There’s no telling what combination will rise to the top on a given night. About the only certainty is that it will sound both fresh and familiar.

Quite often, the improvisations of these musicians give rise to songs, and those momentary communions of musicians become bands - bands like Kudu, Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic, Forro in the Dark, Love Trio, and the Nublu Orchestra conducted by Butch Morris - all representing different moments in time and different sounds, but a similar ideal. That ideal - the indefinable sound that stretches across the creation of every band and DJ within the club’s walls - is known around the house as the Nublu Sound.

Join the Nublu family of artists as they touch down in Brooklyn for an amazing afternoon  of this special music with us at BKLYN Yard.

Artists appearing include:

Wax Poetic version Bresil.. with OTTO  and Barbara
Hess is More
Shitty Shitty Jam Band
Bato the Yugo & Gypsy Boogie
Betty Black with Sylvia from Kudu
I led three lives

May 13th, 2009

On Saturday June 27th, please join us for an epic day of spectacle. Winkel and Balktick, the two masterminds the cities most outlandish underground parties, are bringing their crazy antics to the Gowanus Canal. In a tongue-and-cheek celebration of the canal’s toxicity, they are inviting their vast community to descend upon BKLYN Yard… dressed up like the mutants that must surely live in the nearby waterway.

Expect a aquatic symphony of music, dancing, art, performance, friends, picnicking, imbibing, and all shades of hedonism. DJs, performers, bands, activities & art projects will be announced shortly!

Featuring the Xylopholks and DJs Small Change, Joro Boro, Dhundee, performances by Groovehoops and more entertainment TBA!

Please attend dressed as an undersea love mutant, or ambassador of humanity’s remaining freak population.  Or wear nothing and get bodypainted by friendly mutants.

ALL AGES!  Kids with parents are free!
Full cash bar.  Please, no outside booze.

2pm - 9pm
FREE before 4pm, $7 after!
